Mr. Lévesque is a member of the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Alberta. He has been legal columnist for many medias. Born British subject living in Canada, he became Canadian on January 1, 1947, when the first Citizenship Act came into effect. Lawyer and Notary Public since 1988, Gérard Lévesque has been for a decade (1991-2001) Executive Director of AJEFO, the network of the bilingual judges and lawyers of Ontario. He has also been Editor (1984-1992) Reference Centre for French Language Common Law Documentation, Canadian Law Information Council (CLIC); Director (1990-1992), Center for Legal Translation and Documentation (University of Ottawa); Professor (1991-1992) at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa; and Deputy Judge (1997-2017) at the Toronto Small Claims Court. He has been the author of the original version of "Language Rights of the Accused", a document made available to judges by the National Judicial Institute. Mr. Lévesque has been greatly involved in the field of language rights. He has been Secretary General (1978-1981) French Canadian Association of Ontario; Chairman (1987-1991) of the Official Languages Panel of the Court Challenges Program; and President (1994-1999) of the Council for French Culture in America. In the area of school rights, he played a major role in the recognition of the right of the Franco-Ontarian community to manage its educational facilities. He has been Member Board of directors (1972) of the Canadian Association for French Language Education; President, French Language Advisory Committee Ottawa Board of Education (1975-1976); Eastern Ontario Regional President (1977-1979), Ontario French Language School Boards Association; Trustee (1987-1988), Ottawa Roman Catholic Separate School Board; Member (1986-1994) of the Languages of Instruction Commission of Ontario and Member (1989-1995), Board of directors, St-Anne University (Church Point, Nova Scotia). Mr. Lévesque has received the Medal of the 125th Anniversary of Confederation (1992), the Order of the dialogue of cultures given by the Ontario Section of the French Language Parlementarians (1997) and the Merit Award of the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Ontario (2004). Mr. Lévesque holds a Baccalaureate in Philosophy from St-Paul University, a Baccalaureate in Arts and a Baccalaureate of Laws (1986) from University of Ottawa.
